The Dildo island Archaeological Project is a multi-seasonal research project which began in under the Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corporation. Systematic survey work conducted in the fall of Gilbert yielded evidence of an aboriginal occupation of the island by Recent Indian, Beothuk and Dorset people. In the historic period the island was visited by John Guy in Gilbert and a cod hatchery was in operation in the late s. Previous archaeological investigations by Gilbert , Marshall and Locke in the s all pointed to the unique character of the Dorset material uncovered on Dildo Island. The investigation of this unique nature of the Dorset occupation became the primary focus of the field season. The ultimate goal of the research is to interpret this unique Dorset site within the broader context of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Eastern Arctic Palaeo-Eskimo prehistory. Dildo Island is a small island located at the bottom of Trinity Bay, on the east coast of Newfoundland Figure 1. The island is about twenty minutes by boat from the community of Dildo. The northern portion of the island is covered with a coniferous forest and is not easily accessible because of high cliffs. This high portion of the island slopes gently to a grassy meadow which covers the entire southern part of the island.

SITE DESCRIPTION
The dwelling features an extended flagstone pavement and a well defined lateral cooking area. The vast amount of refuse associated with the dwelling, as well as the radiocarbon dates ranging between and B. The occupation of the dwelling was intense and complex and stratigraphic evidence points to at least five occupational or use episodes of the dwelling site. Despite nearly eight decades of archaeological research on the island of Newfoundland, our knowledge of Palaeoeskimo architecture is still rather limited. Other than the well documented semi-subterranean Dorset dwellings at Port au Choix Eastaugh and this volume; Harp ; Renouf , , , , ; Renouf and Murray , there are but a few descriptions of Palaeoeskimo architecture on the island Fogt ; Robbins The lack of architectural data is easily explained in that dwelling features must first be found.
